Treatments and Services

WVU Medicine audiologists will perform a series of advanced listening tests to measure your ability to hear and process sound. Our hearing specialists will provide you with the most beneficial treatment to help maximize your hearing. Based on your hearing condition, treatment for hearing problems may include a variety of therapies, such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, or assistive communication devices.

Diagnostic testing options include:

  • Basic audiologic assessment
    • Pure tone thresholds for both air and bone conduction, recorded speech testing, and immittance testing
    • Pediatric testing via visual reinforcement audiology or conditioned play audiometry
  • Tinnitus assessment testing
  • Cochlear implant candidacy evaluations
  • Videonystagmography (VNG) testing
  • Auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing
  • Sleep-deprived auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing
    • For children 6 months old and younger
  • Sedated auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing
  • Distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) testing
  • Electrocochleography (ECochG)

Treatment options include:

  •  Hearing aids
    • Our audiology department works with most major hearing aid manufacturers. We provide expert, evidence-based hearing aid fitting services through the use of probe microphone measurements via the Audioscan Verifit 2 equipment in combination with experienced audiologists.
    • We offer hearing aid repairs, cleaning, reprogramming, and checks of most major hearing aid manufacturers.
  •  Bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHA)
    • WVU Medicine Otolaryngology provides both adult and pediatric surgical services for the implantation of bone-anchored hearing aids for patients who are determined to be an appropriate candidate.
    • After surgery, the WVU Medicine audiology team will program the bone-anchored hearing aid and provide continued follow-up care throughout the life of the device.
  •  Cochlear implants
    • WVU Medicine Otolaryngology provides both adult and pediatric surgical services for the cochlear implant. We offer all three cochlear implant manufacturers as an option for our patients.
    • Once the cochlear implant surgery is complete, the WVU Medicine audiology team will program the cochlear implant processor and provide continued follow-up care throughout the life of the device.
  • Tinnitus treatment
    • At WVU Medicine we offer treatment plans for patients with tinnitus or decreased sound tolerance (misophonia or hyperacusis). The chosen treatment method at WVU Medicine is tinnitus retraining therapy.
  • Custom hearing protection
    • We offer a variety of custom hearing protection options for:
      • Swimmers
      • Hunters
      • Musicians (protection and in-ear monitor)
      • Industrial professionals (e.g., mining, construction, factory, automotive)

Treatments and Services

Depending on your condition, sinus and allergy evaluation methods may include discussion about your allergy triggers and medical history, allergy testing, nasal endoscopy, or a CT scan of your sinuses. Our sinus and allergy specialists will work with you to implement allergy-reducing lifestyle changes, administer allergy shots, or recommend the best allergy medication for your individual condition.

If antibiotic treatment does not improve your sinus or allergy condition, non-invasive treatments or surgery may be necessary to restore natural drainage patterns in the nose and sinuses. Whenever possible, we use outpatient, minimally invasive surgical methods, like sinuplasty, with no external incisions and quicker recovery time. In-office procedures under anesthesia are available for some conditions. Sinus and allergy procedures may include:

  • Balloon sinus dilation
  • Correction of deviated septum
  • Cryotherapy for chronic rhinitis
  • Endoscopic sinus surgery
  • Radiofrequency of nasal turbinate

Depending on the type of surgery, most facial plastic surgery can be done safely and comfortably on an outpatient basis. The results of plastic surgery depend not only on the skill and the experience of the plastic surgeon, but also on your age, health, skin texture, bone structure, healing capacity, and any other physical problems you may have.

Facial plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures are usually not covered by insurance and considered to be an elective surgery. Contact your insurance company before your procedure to be sure about coverage.
