MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia University School of Pharmacy will welcome 87 students during the WVU School of Pharmacy 2010 White Coat Ceremony. The ceremony is Saturday, August 21, at 7 p.m. at the Waterfront Place Hotel.
The White Coat Ceremony signifies the students’ entrance into the study of the profession of pharmacy and their commitment to develop, deliver and monitor medications in an effort to improve the health and well-being of their patients.
Elements of the ceremony include: a banquet preceding the ceremony, speeches by administration, presentation and donning of the white coats, signing of the Honor Code, and the recitation of the Pledge of Professionalism. Patrick Callery, Ph.D., professor, and the Class of 2014 advisor, will lead the Pledge.
Speakers at the ceremony will include Patricia Chase, Ph.D., dean of the WVU School of Pharmacy; Kent Hunter, Pharm.D., president-elect of the WVU School of Pharmacy Alumni Association; and Fred Butcher, Ph.D., vice president of planning and operations at the WVU Health Sciences Center.
Students will receive their white coats from School of Pharmacy faculty members Matthew Blommel, Pharm.D., clinical assistant professor, Department of Clinical Pharmacy; Peter Gannett, Ph.D., professor, Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences; and Lena Maynor, Pharm.D., clinical assistant professor, Department of Clinical Pharmacy.
The White Coat Ceremony and laboratory coats for the first-year students were made possible by the generous donations of alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the WVU School of Pharmacy.
