Proceeds benefit children with pulmonary problems
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 18th annual September Stride is Saturday, Sept. 25 at 9 a.m. This event – a 5K run and walk – is sponsored by WVU Healthcare’s Rehabilitation Services Department.
The race fee is $18 for the public and $15 for employees of WVU Healthcare if signed up by Sept. 17. After early registration, and on race day, the cost is $20 for all participants. The fee includes a T-shirt and a pasta dinner at 6 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center cafeteria. Speaking at the dinner is 2008 Olympian and 2005 NCAA 5,000-meter champion, Megan Metcalfe Wright, a physical therapist in rehab services at WVU Healthcare.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers, as well as a $100 cash prize for setting a new men’s or women’s course record. Prizes will also be awarded to age group, heavyweight and employee winners in the 5K run and walk. All participants are eligible for prize drawings.
The race will begin and end in the parking lots between Ruby Memorial Hospital and Mountaineer Field. The 5K is a two-loop course and includes one water stop. For the convenience of parents who want to run, kids will be able to participate in arts-and-crafts activities and races throughout the morning. Kids must be at least 1-year-old to participate in the activities. WVU students can earn two hours of volunteer credit by participating in the race. Volunteer hour credit forms will be available at the registration table on race day.
September Stride benefits the Richard Rosenbaum Memorial Fund, which provides medication and equipment to children with cystic fibrosis and other pulmonary problems. His family is responsible for creating the fund, as well as the Rosenbaum Family House, which provides a place for adult patients and their families to stay while receiving medical care at WVUH.
Richard “Rick” Rosenbaum was treated for cystic fibrosis at WVU from the time he was born until he died at age 36. Event organizers remember Rosenbaum as not only a local businessman but also a good friend.
