WVU Medicine East offers free sports physicals to local students

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – WVU Medicine East recently provided over 900 free sports physicals to students from Berkeley and Jefferson Counties.

WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center welcomed over 550 high school students during three days of the Berkeley Medical Center Teen Health Festival. In addition to receiving a free sports physical exam, students had the opportunity to visit information booths and participate in activities sponsored by the hospital and other community organizations.

“This is a wonderful event to provide high school physicals combined with health education to student athletes,” Cathy Funk, M.D., teen health fest coordinator, said. “We have great kids in our community and this festival is a reminder that we need to take the time to support them.”

WVU Medicine University Healthcare Physicians hosted over 350 middle and high school students from Jefferson County during a two hour event.

“Serving the youth of our community with free sports physicals is an event our staff and providers anticipate and enjoy every year,” George D. Harris, M.D., M.S., primary care division medical director for University Healthcare Physicians, said. “It provides a collegial, enjoyable afternoon outside of the walls of our clinics. It truly promotes the theme of ‘patient-education-community’ through volunteerism.”

Students who were unable to attend can receive sports physicals for discounted rate of $25 at the WVU Medicine Urgent Care locations in Spring Mills, Charles Town, and Inwood through August 31.
