Advanced CT technology now available at WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Eastern Panhandle residents have access to advanced computed tomography (CT) technology that is safe and fast with the recent installation of Canon Medical Systems’ Aquilion™ ONE/GENESIS Edition at WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg.

“We installed the Aquilion ONE/GENESIS Edition because we want our patients to feel comfortable knowing that we have the latest CT technology available that allows for quicker and more accurate diagnosis,” David Agoney, assistant radiology manager, said. “The system meets our clinical needs by helping us save valuable time with faster exams while also significantly reducing radiation dose to keep our patients safe.”

The Aquilion ONE/GENESIS Edition offers fast scanning that may help reduce the need for rescans due to artifacts, which happens often with critically ill and trauma patients. The system offers dynamic volume CT imaging that is sharp, fast, and small. This is ideal for life-threatening conditions like heart disease and stroke.

The system features an optimized beam spectrum based on PUREVISION Optics, PUREVISION detector, and FIRST (MBIR), improving high-contrast spatial resolution up to 129 percent (2.29 times) while reducing radiation dose up to 85.3 percent.  Additionally, the system is small, light and consumes less power with a short bore and 30-degree tilting gantry for patient comfort and safety.

“The new technology provides better image clarity with shorter scan time,” Sanjay Saluja, M.D., WVU Medicine radiologist, said. “The shorter scan time reduces radiation by 20-40 percent for the average study.”

According to Dr. Saluja, the improvements in image reconstruction algorithms lead to better quality images whether analyzing the lungs or more complex scans, such as cardiac scans.
