WVU Health Expo is Friday Oct. 1

Flu shots available

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – How healthy are you? You can find out at the West Virginia University Health Expo this Friday, Oct. 1 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Morgantown Mall.

The expo will feature 47 exhibitors representing departments and programs at WVU Healthcare, WVU Health Sciences and affiliated organizations.

“Hundreds of WVU health professionals –  including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists and therapists – will be at the mall promoting prevention and early detection,” Stephanie Bock, director of community relations for WVU Healthcare, said. “We normally provide more than 4,000 health screenings at the event – mostly free – that can save lives.”

The seasonal flu vaccine, which includes immunization for H1N1 (swine flu), is available to anyone 8 years or older for $25.  WVU Healthcare experts will also be there to answer questions about various topics including osteoporosis, lung disease, mental health, substance abuse and sleep.

Screenings and assessments given throughout the day include:
•    Blood Pressure Screenings
•    Body Fat Analyses (not recommended for people with a pacemaker or similar device)
•    Glaucoma Screenings
•    Ultrasound Screenings- gallbladder and abdominal aorta (wear loose-fitting clothing/ fast for 8 hours for best results)
•    Vision Screenings
•    Breast Health Screenings

Some of the screenings and services provided at the expo, such as blood screenings, will require registration. There is a $35 fee for the multiphasic blood test, and patients should fast for 12 hours for the best results. The PSA blood test costs $15.
