Dave Harshbarger, MS, CWP – Manager, Wellness

Biography

Originally from West Virginia, Dave has been with West Virginia University Hospitals since 1995 as the Wellness Manager for the Health Sciences Campus of West Virginia University. Here he manages an on-site wellness program for more than 8,000 employees. Prior to this he lived in the Boston, MA area for eight years while working for Fitcorp. While at Fitcorp, he managed fitness and wellness facilities and oversaw the delivery of these services to corporate clients.

Dave earned his M.S. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Delaware, and his B.S. from West Virginia University in Physical Education. He has served as both a member of the Board of Directors and also past president for the Wellness Council of West Virginia and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Mon River Trails Conservancy better known as our local Rails Trails.

Eric Smith, MBA, CPT – Program Coordinator, Wellness

Biography

Eric is a native of Morgantown, WV and is the program coordinator responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operations of the Wellness department including creating and sending out wellness communications, fitness center management, and serving as the certified personal trainer on staff (certified through the American Council on Exercise).

Prior to this he worked for over six years for PEIA Pathways to Wellness, a work-site based wellness program for state employees of West Virginia. While there, he was responsible for the delivery of program services including comprehensive health screenings and lifestyle intervention programs to worksites residing in an eight county region of North-Central West Virginia. Eric earned his M.B.A. in 2005 from St. Thomas University (Miami Gardens, FL), and his B.S. in Sport Management from West Virginia University in 2002. He likes to spend his free time playing softball, basketball, and walking his dog Hunter.

 

Alyssa Chafin – Graduate Assistant, Wellness

Biography

Alyssa is working as a graduate assistant for the Wellness department while she is pursuing her Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology at West Virginia University. Her previous education includes a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology also from WVU. Alyssa currently assists with Neuroscience research in the Sensory Neuroscience department and loves learning about the brain. After obtaining her Master’s degree, she hopes to continue her education by attending Medical School in the state of West Virginia, where she was born and raised. Alyssa stays active by doing yoga and spinning at Zenergy cycling studio, where she also works as a front desk employee. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, exploring West Virginia, and taking her parent’s German shepherd on walks.

Alexandria Saweikis – Graduate Assistant, Wellness

Biography

After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology and a minor in Disability Studies, Allie is pursuing her Masters degree in Exercise Physiology at West Virginia University while working as a graduate assistant for the Wellness Department. With this degree and experience Allie is hoping to continue her education at West Virginia University by going into the Physician Assistant program that has started there. She is looking forward to taking the knowledge she gains and incorporating it into her practice to ensure that her patients understand how exercising regularly benefits both mental and physical health. Although not born in West Virginia, she likes to consider herself a true native after being in the state for 10 plus years and by always cheering on our Mountaineers. When she is not studying or working, she enjoys playing with her dog, working on her flower garden and going on hikes in the wild and wonderful state.
