Dave Harshbarger, MS, CWP – Manager, Wellness

Biography

Originally from West Virginia, Dave has been with West Virginia University Hospitals since 1995 as the Wellness Manager for the Health Sciences Campus of West Virginia University. Here he manages an on-site wellness program for WVU Medicine employees, WVU Health Sciences faculty, staff and students. Prior to this he lived in the Boston, MA area for eight years while working for Fitcorp. While at Fitcorp, he managed fitness and wellness facilities and oversaw the delivery of these services to corporate clients.

Dave earned his M.S. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Delaware, and his B.S. from West Virginia University in Physical Education. He has served as both a member of the Board of Directors and also past president for the Wellness Council of West Virginia and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Mon River Trails Conservancy better known as our local Rails Trails.

Biography

Shaylee Peckens, MD is an Assistant Professor (clinical) in WVU School of Medicine and Medical Director of Quality and Performance Improvement for WVU Medicine Department of Family Medicine. She is a certified PCMH NCQA content expert and Associate Director of the Population Health Management in Primary Care Fellowship. Dr. Peckens also serves on the WVU School of Medicine Admissions Committee and several committees within WVU medicine and the Department of Family Medicine. She is the chairperson of the Teambuilding Committee for the Department of Family Medicine and is the leader of departmental quality improvement teams and practice wide initiatives. Dr. Peckens provides patient care in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Her professional interests include quality improvement, population health management, preventative medicine, health and wellness in primary care, and resident and student education. Personal passions include singing, involvement in church and community, playing and watching sports, and enjoying time with family and friends.

Eric Smith, MBA, CPT – Program Coordinator, Wellness

Biography

Eric is a native of Morgantown, WV and is the wellness program coordinator responsible for assisting the wellness manager in the day-to-day operations of the Wellness department including managing the Wellness Rewards benefits program, wellness communications, fitness center management, supervising staff graduate assistants and serving as the certified personal trainer certified through the American Council on Exercise.

Prior to this he worked for over six years for PEIA Pathways to Wellness, a work-site based wellness program for state employees of West Virginia. While there, he was responsible for the delivery of program services including comprehensive health screenings and lifestyle intervention programs to worksites residing in an eight county region of North-Central West Virginia. Eric earned his M.B.A. in 2005 from St. Thomas University (Miami Gardens, FL), and his B.S. in Sport Management from West Virginia University in 2002. He likes to spend his free time playing softball, basketball, and walking his dog Hunter.

Biography

Courtney graduated from Marshall University in December 2022 with a bachelor’s of science in Exercise Science and with a minor in Psychology. She currently serves as a graduate assistant for the Wellness Center while pursuing her master’s degree in clinical Exercise Physiology. Courtney plans to go into Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation after graduation.

Biography

Lauren graduated from West Virginia University in December 2022 with a bachelor’s of science in Exercise Physiology and with a minor in Psychology. She currently serves the Wellness Center as a graduate assistant while she pursues her master’s degree in clinical Exercise Physiology. In her free time, Lauren enjoys being outside, exercising, and taking naps with her cat, Milo. After completing her masters, Lauren plans to pursue her doctorate in physical therapy.
