Unopposed Training

The Family Medicine Residency is the only residency at United Hospital Center – A 300+ bed hospital and a medical staff of more than 350 physicians, located in Bridgeport, WV.

Fortune/IBM Watson Health recognized the top 100 hospitals for clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience and financial health; while the Lown Institute recognizes civic leadership, value care and patient outcomes.

100% Board Pass Rates

Residents consistently achieve 100% Board Pass rates for both the ABFM and AOBFP Board Certification Exams with scores at or above the national average.

History of Success

For more than 40 years the program has produced highly trained family physicians for traditional outpatient, inpatient, and rural practices as well preparing residents for various fellowships in geriatrics, sports medicine, emergency medicine and hospital medicine.

Specialty Tracks

The program offers an ACGME Osteopathic Recognized Osteopathic track, well as Integrative Medicine and Sports Medicine Tracks for residents looking to enhance their training in specific areas and offering opportunities for regional and national presentations.

Dedicated Faculty & Staff

Residents in our program receive a very well-rounded experience with 6 full-time core Family Medicine faculty and countless specialists and other teaching faculty including behavioral medicine, PharmD, RNs, dieticians, and case managers. Residents work in interdisciplinary teams in the clinic and hospital setting, including involvement in quality improvement projects and medical staff committees.

In addition to affordability, low crime rates and wonderful people, North Central West Virginia boasts beautiful scenery in all four seasons with many outdoor activities year around and is a short drive to Pittsburgh, PA, Washington D.C., Richmond, VA, Columbus, OH and Baltimore, Maryland.

Community Involvement

Residents and faculty participate in local activities such as Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Shepherds Corner, the Shriners Orthopedics Clinics, the American Heart Association Heart Walk and Heathy Harrison, in addition to Women and Men health screenings, Lung Cancer screenings and local health fairs and events with various organizations.

As part of the WVU Medicine Health System our program offers benefits associated with an academic medical center while providing hands-on training at an unopposed training site. Residents have the opportunity to rotate at virtually any WVU Medicine facility. So in addition the wide variety of rotations available at UHC in an unopposed setting, residents can choose electives in the Medical ICU at the academic medical center or do rural family medicine with small town, traditional family doctors.
