Flexible Scheduling

Along with traditional 8-hour or12-hour shifts and set schedules, WVUH offers straight shifts, rotating shifts and 4-week schedules to provide you with more flexibility.

Commuter Program

West Virginia University Hospital’s direct care nursing staff that travels a designated distance (60 miles or 90 minutes) or requires “Just in Time” (less than 12 hours) housing to meet unexpected nurse staffing requirement and meets other employment criteria will be provided an offsite bed accommodation to stay between their regular scheduled shifts. This pilot program is from September 1, 2016 – February 28, 2017.

Compensation Philosophy

Your salary is based on your experience, and you can earn even more money depending on the shift you work (10%    off-shift differential, weekend incentive program). It is the goal of WVUH to stay competitive with regard to your pay. Every 6 months your salary will be evaluated, and WVUH is committed to staying above the market with RN salaries.

Weekend Incentive Program

The weekend incentive program for registered nurses consists of individuals working weekend shifts of a minimum 0.5 or 0.6 FTE between the hours of 3p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Monday for additional pay. To the extent possible, all shifts on a given weekend will be scheduled for the same hours (7am or 7pm).  The Weekend Incentive pay applies to the time worked on the weekend incentive program; time worked during the week is paid at your hourly base rate.  Weekend RNs commit to work .6 FTE (24 hours per week) schedule every weekend with the option of taking the 6th weekend off with PDO; or greater than .6 FTE scheduled every weekend with the remainder of FTE scheduled during the week.

Per Diem Program

Tell us when you want to work! The Per Diem Program allows you the flexibility to work a minimum commitment of two shifts per month (at least one off-shift or weekend shift is required) with premium pay.

Shared Decision Making

Nursing staff are involved in decision making in areas of practice, education, and recruitment and retention.  Staff has the opportunity to participate on hospital wide and unit based teams such as: Nursing Advisory Council, Unit Practice Teams, Education Team, Recruitment and Retention Team, Quality Council, and Nursing Research Council.

Certifications for Nurses

WVUH will financially support the attainment and recertification of certifications that are recognized through national organizations.

Unit orientation is designed to meet your needs based on your work experience and skill level. You will be paired with an experienced mentor with whom you’ll work closely for a minimum of 6 weeks.
