MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Cancer survivors and their caregivers will be honored during the annual Cancer Survivors Day celebration at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21 at Lakeview Golf Resort and Spa in Morgantown. The event is a joint effort of the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and WVU Healthcare.
“The good news about cancer is that more people are surviving the disease and leading fulfilling, productive lives. The number of cancer survivors in the United States has grown from 3 million in 1971 to nearly 12 million in 2007. This increase is thanks to early detection, more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatment,” Jame Abraham, M.D., medical director of the Cancer Center, said. “The number of cancer survivors attending our celebration increases with each passing year. This is a testament to our patient-centered facility and the many patients who entrust us with their care. I thank them for being our source of inspiration.”
Participants will be treated to a sit-down dinner and will be encouraged to share their cancer journey with fellow survivors.
“Cancer Survivors Day gives our healthcare team a chance to celebrate the lives of our patients with them,” Deborah Falconi, R.N., director of oncology services for WVU Healthcare, said. “We are aware of the battles they face dealing with cancer and are amazed by their strength and courage. We are honored to serve them and to recognize them on this special day.”
WVU’s Survivors Day draws cancer survivors, their families and friends, from West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
