WVU student pharmacists to hold health fair for residents of the Village at Heritage Point

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Second-year students from the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy are organizing a health fair from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, for residents of the Village at Heritage Point in Morgantown.

Residents of the Village at Heritage Point will receive various health screenings, such as bone mineral density, blood pressure and diabetes. They will also be able to speak with student pharmacists and faculty members with their healthcare questions and concerns on several different health topics.

Information booths about immunizations, Alzheimer’s disease, heartburn, diabetes, over-the-counter medications, proper medication disposal and fall risk will also be available for residents.

“We are hosting a health fair because it gives us a chance to speak one on one with the residents about their health concerns and educate them about different health topics,” second-year student pharmacist Amanda Johnson of Parkersburg said. “We hope that this event will not only give residents a better understanding of the healthcare services pharmacists can provide, but that they will also take the information we provide and use it to make decisions for a healthier life.”

The WVU student pharmacists and faculty members will also provide medication reviews for residents. Participants are asked to bring any current medications they are taking, both prescription and over the counter, to discuss any questions they might have about them.

The WVU student pharmacists were partnered with the Village at Heritage Point through the West Virginia University Center for Civic Engagement for their Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience course, which promotes service to the community.

Community members interested in attending the health fair should contact Rebecca Burton at the Village at Heritage Point at 304-598-5481.
