MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Five dental hygiene students in the West Virginia University School of Dentistry received awards for their research at the Dr. Clarence C. and Maxine Davis Cottrill Endowed Lecture: Restoration of the Worn Dentition, which was held on Saturday, April 27, at the WVU Health Sciences Center.
Kerri Thomas of Morgantown and Whitney Nestor from Moatsville won first place for their project titled “Preventative and Therapeutic Effectiveness of Silver Diamine Flouride (SDF) and Sodium Flouride (NaF) Against Candida albicans and Lactobacillus.”
For their award-winning work, they received $250 from the WVU School of Dentistry Alumni Association and will be presenting their research poster during the national competition at the American Dental Hygiene Association Annual Session, which will be held June 19 in Boston.
Courtney Wilkes from Morgantown received $200 for her second-place poster titled “Emergency Department Visits Resulting in a Dental Related Diagnoses in a North Central West Virginia Hospital.”
Third place winners, Michael Law from Morgantown and Chelsea Ellison from Annapolis, Md., created a table clinic that featured their research on the topic “Upon Us All, a Little Aerosol Will Fall.” Law and Ellison received $150 for their efforts.
