Barnesville Hospital holds Donate Life Month flag raising ceremony

BARNESVILLE, OHIO – WVU Medicine Barnesville Hospital hosted a flag-raising ceremony on Thursday, April 9, in honor of National Donate Life Month to raise awareness of organ, eye, and tissue donation.  

“Just last year, Barnesville Hospital had one tissue donor and three eye donors,” April Lopez, donation program coordinator for Lifeline of Ohio, said during the event.  

Lopez also shared the importance of Donate Life Month and how much of an impact it can have, emphasizing the critical need for registered donors and the lasting difference one decision can make for individuals and families waiting for lifesaving transplants. 

Jacqueline Poole, an ambassador for Lifeline of Ohio, delivered a heartfelt message as she spoke about her son, Dean, who passed away in an automobile accident on June 25, 2011, and became a donor hero. 

“Just three months prior to Deans accident, he received his license and instantly said yes to becoming a registered donor,” she said. “This didn’t come as a surprise to me this is how Dean had always lived his life, helping others.” 

“Because, as of today, Dean continues to live on through others, and he’ll always be remembered.” 

Poole’s story served as a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of organ donation and the legacy donors leave behind through the lives they save. 

In addition to the ceremony, an educational table and pinwheel garden are on display at Barnesville Hospital throughout the month, offering visitors an opportunity to learn more about organ donation and to honor donor heroes.
