WVU Medicine welcomes oncologist, cancer center medical director

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center and University Health Associates welcome Hematologist/Oncologist Sam O. Wanko, M.D., F.A.C.P., as the new regional medical director of the WVU Cancer Institute in Martinsburg.

He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and completed an internal medicine residency at Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia followed by fellowships in hematology/oncology and stem cell transplantation at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Dr. Wanko, who brings over 20 years of experience of medical practice to WVU Medicine including 13 years in hematology/oncology, is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. He treats all malignant tumor types as well as benign hematologic concerns, and has special clinical and research interests in gastrointestinal, genitourinary and hematologic cancers.

In his new role, Wanko will oversee hematology/oncology care at both Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Medical Center. He is an assistant professor of medicine at the WVU School of Medicine. He joins WVU Medicine from Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland where he was on active duty with the United States Navy.
