MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The American College of Radiology (ACR) has accredited the mammography services offered at WVU Medicine’s outpatient clinic located near the Fairmont Gateway Connector. The new accreditation will be granted for three years.
To receive accreditation, WVU Medicine must provide detailed information to the ACR, including background details about the technologists and radiologists who perform exams, their understanding and compliance with federal regulations, and annual quality control data.
The units also submit samples of their highest quality images about specific cases and document the process of interpreting the image and the method of care recommended. An ACR board of radiologists reviews the images and protocols to determine if they agree with the findings.
With this accreditation, all mammography units within the WVU Medicine Department of Radiology are ACR accredited.
The ACR represents more than 38,000 diagnostic radiologists, radiation oncologists, interventional radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists. Its core functional areas — advocacy, economics, education, quality and safety, research, and membership value — are improving, promoting, and protecting the practice of radiology. Founded in 1923, ACR has 54 chapters in 50 states, Washington D.C., Canada, Puerto Rico, and CARROS, the Council of Affiliated Regional Radiation Oncology Societies.
