MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – WVU Medicine East will host a free hernia screening event on Saturday, December 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
During the event, participants will be examined by Mazin Shackour, M.D., general surgeon, and watch a short presentation about hernia treatment.
If it is determined that hernia repair surgery is required, minimally invasive robotic surgery using the Intuitive da Vinci Xi® robot is now available at WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center. The da Vinci Xi will be onsite for demonstrations throughout the event. Benefits of robotic hernia surgery include less pain and an earlier return to normal activities.
A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. Symptoms include pain or a bulge in the abdomen or groin. Those who have a family history of hernia, frequently lift heavy objects or have had an abdominal surgery are at elevated risk of developing a hernia. Approximately 25 percent of men will develop a hernia in their lifetime.
