WVU Medicine Berkeley, Jefferson mammography services pass inspection

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – WVU Medicine East is proud to announce that the women’s imaging centers at Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Medical Center recently passed the Mammography Quality Standard Act (MQSA) inspection with 100% compliance.

The MQSA requires mammography facilities across the nation to meet uniform quality standards. According to Leslie Lee, director of imaging services at WVU Medicine East, not one issue or concern was noted on the recent inspections.

The MQSA assures high-quality mammography for early breast cancer detection which can lead to early treatment, a range of treatment options and increased chances of survival. Under the law, all mammography facilities must be accredited by an FDA-approved body, certified by the FDA (or State) as meeting the standards, undergo an annual MSQA inspection, and prominently display the certificate issued by the agency.

“Women who receive mammography services at Berkeley and Jefferson Medical Centers can be confident they are receiving the highest level of image quality and examinations,” Anthony P. Zelenka, president and chief executive officer, said.

Both hospitals offer the latest screening and diagnostic technology available for breast cancer screening which is digital mammography using 3D breast tomosynthesis (tomo). In 2011, Jefferson Medical Center was the first hospital in West Virginia to offer this revolutionary technology which allows physicians to look at 3-dimensional images that can show very small breast cancers.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a women’s chance of survival.

“WVU Medicine is committed to the fight against breast cancer and is proud to offer the highest quality of mammography imaging services to our community,” Leslie Lee, director of imaging services, said. “Passing the annual MQSA inspection with no findings is an example of our commitment to excellence.”
