MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – If sevens truly are lucky, WVU Hospitals just hit the jackpot. For the seventh time, WVUH has been named to AARP’s list of Best Employers for Workers Over 50. Of the 50 winners for 2013, WVUH ranked number 12.
To be selected for the award, employers must demonstrate exemplary practices with regard to recruitment, retention and promotion of older workers. They must also create and foster a workplace that is supportive of the contributions older workers offer to the business community. The award is now given out every two years to allow employers to develop, test and implement effective strategies to attract and retain top talent. At WVUH, 27 percent of the workforce is age 50 or older.
“We are proud of this recognition from the AARP,” Bruce McClymonds, president and CEO of WVUH, said. “This award reflects our ongoing commitment to implement programs and services that attract the best and brightest to WVU Healthcare.”
AARP estimates that by 2016, one-third of the total U.S. workforce will be age 50 or older, up from 28 percent in 2007. The percentage of workers in their early 20s is projected to decline, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Attracting and retaining mature, experienced employees is becoming increasingly important for employers who seek to fill critical skill shortages and retain their competitive edge in today’s marketplace.
The winners of the Best Employers for Workers Over 50 were announced today at the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Annual Conference in Chicago. SHRM is a co-sponsor of the award.
