WVU Alumni collect socks for sick kids

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – What does 1,000 pairs of socks look like? WVU Medicine Children’s and the Hill Country Mountaineer WVU Alumni Chapter in Austin, Texas, mean to find out.

The Sock It To ‘Em project is collecting socks of all sizes throughout the month of October for patients at WVU Medicine Children’s. The goal is to reach 1,000 pairs of socks. Alumni and friends have already pledged to donate more than 300 pairs.

“The children of West Virginia are important to our future. This program gives all members of our Mountaineer family an opportunity to support them,” Pattie Roe, founder and former president of the Hill Country Mountaineer WVU Alumni Chapter, said.

WVU president E. Gordon Gee, J.D., Ed.D., has thrown his support behind the project as well. If the 1,000-pair goal is met, President Gee will pose for a photo with the donated socks.

Donated socks will be distributed to patients in the hospital to keep them warm and comfortable as they face long days of illness and treatments this winter.

Two years ago, the Hill Country chapter worked with other WVU alumni chapters to collect pajamas for WVU Medicine Children’s, presenting more than 500 pairs of pajamas to encourage kids in the hospital around Christmas.

The Hill Country Mountaineer WVU Alumni Chapter is partnering with the WVU School of Nursing Student Nurses' Association to support the kids at WVU Medicine Children’s.

Donations will be accepted through October 30.

Brand new socks in their original packaging, sized for newborns to 18 year olds, may be sent to WVU School of Nursing Attn: Gregg Cave, 6700 Health Sciences South (P.O. Box 9600), Morgantown, WV 26506.
