UHC joins the American Diabetes Association for Alert Day

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Did you know that nearly 30 million people in the United States have diabetes, and more than a quarter of them — 8 million — don’t even know they have it? An additional 86 million have prediabetes, which puts them at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

“March 22 is American Diabetes Association Alert Day, and I encourage you to take the Diabetes Risk Test and find out if you are at risk for type 2 diabetes,” Patty Cook, R.N., diabetes education coordinator at United Hospital Center, said. “Your health and well-being matters to UHC, and all it takes is one minute to protect your health for a lifetime.”

By understanding your risk, you can take the necessary steps to help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. Your answers and results are completely anonymous. If you are more comfortable, please take the Risk Test on your smartphone or your home computer.

“Early diagnosis is critical. It is unfortunate that a type 2 diabetes diagnosis often comes seven to 10 years after the disease’s onset and after disabling and even deadly complications have had time to develop," Cook said.

“Ask your loved one to take the test, too. It’s easy: Simply go to www.diabetes.org/takeaminute to take the test today. We have printed risk tests available at UHC, too. Please contact me at 681-342-1862 if you would like for me to send you the one-page test.”

American Diabetes Association Alert Day draws attention to the growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes in the United States. It’s important to understand that type 2 diabetes can be controlled with knowledge and a healthy behavior.

Take the Diabetes Risk Test today and get the information you need to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes and maintain your good health. Encourage your colleagues, family members, and friends to take the risk test. Together, we can help stop diabetes.
