Local veterans to be honored at the Glen Dale Annual Memorial Day Celebration

GLEN DALE, W.Va. – Don’t miss the Glen Dale Annual Memorial Day Celebration, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday, May 28, at Glen Dale City Park.

The celebration will begin with a welcome from Mayor David Blazer. Glen Dale Veteran David Schoenian will speak to commemorate veterans. This year, there will be a special tribute to Howard “Biggie” Byard, World War II veteran and Glen Dale’s former mayor and county commissioner for more than 38 years, and the naming of Biggie Byard Boulevard.

Bring the kids because there will be free swimming at the pool all day long. The pool will open after the ceremony and stay open until 10 p.m. WVU Medicine Reynolds Memorial Hospital will provide free hot dogs and cake to the public.

For the first time, there will be a special evening service. Kathy’s House Foundation will provide a decorated luminary bag for every veteran that will be recognized at the service. Head back to the park by 8:45 p.m. to see the lighting of the luminaries and hear Michael Loborec’s rendition of taps on his bagpipes.
