Jefferson Medical Center awarded accreditation from The Joint Commission

RANSON, W.Va. – WVU Medicine Jefferson Medical Center has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for accreditation by demonstrating compliance with the organization’s national standards for health care quality and safety.

The accreditation award recognizes Jefferson Medical Center’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards. The hospital underwent a rigorous unannounced on-site survey in July. A team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated Jefferson Medical Center for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients, including infection prevention and control, leadership, and medication management.

“As a private accreditor, The Joint Commission surveys health care organizations to protect the public by identifying deficiencies in care and working with those organizations to correct them as quickly and sustainably as possible,” Mark Pelletier, chief operating officer, division of accreditation and certification operations at The Joint Commission, said. “We commend Jefferson Medical Center for its continuous quality improvement efforts in patient safety and quality of care.”

The Joint Commission’s hospital standards address important functions relating to the care of patients and the management of hospitals. The standards are developed in consultation with health care experts, providers, measurement experts, and patients.

“Achieving Joint Commission accreditation demonstrates the significant investment WVU Medicine has made in advancing health care in West Virginia’s Eastern Region,” Dean Thomas, president and CEO of WVU Medicine Berkeley and Jefferson Medical Centers, said. “As a critical access hospital, Jefferson Medical Center brings essential services to rural Jefferson County. This accreditation confirms our commitment to excellence and expanding access to convenient, quality health care throughout the communities we serve.”

Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits more than 18,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. As an independent, not-for-profit organization, it is the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care.
