Frank Sabado Pre-Med Scholarship recipients named

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – WVU Medicine University Healthcare Foundation Tennis Classic Co-Chairs Ernie Agbayani, M.D., and Roberto Reyna, M.D., recently announced the 2017 recipients of the Frank Sabado, Jr., M.D., Tennis Classic Scholarship.

Proceeds from the 2016 tennis classic were used to establish a one-time $2,000 scholarship to be awarded to a senior from each of the six public high schools in Berkeley and Jefferson counties studying pre-med in the fall of 2017.

The six scholarship recipients are Cekiah Thornton, Hedgesville High School; Grace Kubic, Jefferson High School; Caroline Kayes, Martinsburg High School; Blair Lewis, Musselman High School; Lee Curran, Spring Mills High School; and Erin McGowan, Washington High School.

“We want to encourage and assist area youth interested in becoming physicians,” Dr. Reyna said. “Because this tournament was established in 2004 by a group of local physicians, the committee felt it was appropriate to establish a scholarship to support local students pursuing a career in medicine."

The tennis classic was renamed in memory of Dr. Sabado in 2015. He was one of the founding members and served as the event’s chair. The Frank Sabado, Jr., M.D., Tennis Classic is held the second Saturday in September at St. James School. For more information, call 304-264-1223.
