Balloon release planned in memory of late WVU Children’s Hospital patient

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Brain cancer may have taken Johnny Koon in 2005, but that doesn’t mean that his birthday shouldn’t be properly celebrated. In honor of what would have been his 21st birthday, a balloon release and celebration is scheduled for Sept. 2 at Kingdom Evangelical Methodist Church in Westover.

“Helium to Heaven” will kick off at 4 p.m. with live music, food, entertainment and door prizes. Balloons will be released at 5:30 p.m. The festivities will pick back up after the release.

Those interested in supporting the event can purchase a balloon for $5. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Johnny Koon Pediatric Brain Tumor Research Fund at West Virginia University Children’s Hospital.

Johnny Koon was the son of Michele and John Koon of Morgantown. His siblings, Ashley and Glendon, have previously participated in the WVU Children’s Hospital Cards of Hope program in his memory.
