WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals Opens New Hybrid Operating Room at Thomas Memorial Hospital

WVU Medicine Thomas Hospitals announced today the opening of its new Hybrid Operating Room (OR) at Thomas Memorial Hospital. A Hybrid OR is the integration of a surgical OR with an advanced X-ray imaging system enabling surgeons and interventionalists to perform the most advanced minimally invasive procedures. The Hybrid OR is an extension of the cath lab and will be utilized by the heart and vascular team at Thomas Hospitals.

Minimally invasive surgical procedures are complex and technically demanding, requiring a high quality, flexible imaging solution. This rapidly evolving clinical trend towards minimally invasive procedures is driving demand for Hybrid ORs.
“The Hybrid OR at Thomas Memorial Hospital provides the heart and vascular team with the highest degree of flexibility for standard vascular and cardiac procedures, as well as those that require sophisticated technology for both minimally invasive and open procedures,” Greg Rosencrance, M.D., president and CEO of Thomas Hospitals, said.  “We are pleased to again expand and strengthen our services to provide premier heart and vascular care to patients in Southern West Virginia.”

The Hybrid OR at Thomas Memorial Hospital is equipped with a sophisticated imaging system, Philips Azurion with FlexArm, which allows physicians to perform minimally invasive cardiac and vascular procedures with greater precision than ever before and can be used as a full OR in the case of an emergency. Using a piece of equipment commonly referred to as a C-arm, physicians can take pictures all the way around a person’s body. This three-dimensional view allows the entire care team to work with extreme accuracy when performing cardiac and vascular procedures.
Thomas Hospitals, through its partnership with the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, provides comprehensive cardiac care for patients with heart problems, including shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations, high blood pressure, and vascular disease. Thomas Memorial Hospital expanded its advanced cardiac services to include open-heart surgery in March 2024 in response to the unmet needs and high demand for advanced cardiac surgery in the Charleston area and Southern West Virginia.
