Dave Harshbarger, MS, CWP – Manager, Wellness

Originally from West Virginia, Dave has been with West Virginia University Hospitals since 1995 as the Wellness Manager for the Health Sciences Campus of West Virginia University. Here he manages an on-site wellness program for more than 8,000 employees. Prior to this he lived in the Boston, MA area for eight years while working for Fitcorp. While at Fitcorp, he managed fitness and wellness facilities and oversaw the delivery of these services to corporate clients.

Dave earned his M.S. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Delaware, and his B.S. from West Virginia University in Physical Education. He has served as both a member of the Board of Directors and also past president for the Wellness Council of West Virginia and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Mon River Trails Conservancy better known as our local Rails Trails.


Eric Smith, MBA, CPT – Program Coordinator, Wellness

Eric is a native of Morgantown, WV and is the program coordinator responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operations of the Wellness Center including creating and sending out wellness communications, fitness center management, and serving as the certified personal trainer on staff (certified through the American Council on Exercise). Prior to this he worked for over six years for PEIA Pathways to Wellness, a work-site based wellness program for state employees of West Virginia. While there, he was responsible for the delivery of program services including comprehensive health screenings and lifestyle intervention programs to worksites residing in an eight county region of North-Central West Virginia. Eric earned his M.B.A. in 2005 from St. Thomas University (Miami Gardens, FL), and his B.S. in Sport Management from West Virginia University in 2002. He likes to spend his free time playing softball, basketball, and walking his dog Hunter.


Heather Bonaparte, MPH, CHC – Program Coordinator, Wellness

Heather joined the Wellness Center team in 2013. She serves as program coordinator and as the certified health coach on staff (certified through the American Council on Exercise). She is a native of Washington, PA and received her B.S. from Slippery Rock University in Community Health in 2009 and her M.P.H. from West Virginia University in 2011. During her time at WVU, Heather was also a graduate assistant with the Wellness Center. After graduation, she worked as a public health educator and health coach before returning to the Wellness Center. In her spare time, Heather enjoys spending time with friends and family and being awesome.


Diane Richardson – Staff Assistant, Wellness

Diane is a native of Morgantown, WV and started working at West Virginia University in 1975. She has worked in many departments including: WVU’s Recreation & Intramural Sports, School of Pharmacy, Urology, and Otolaryngology. After taking some time off to raise her family, she returned to work for West Virginia University Hospitals in 1985 working for the departments of Clinical Labs, Patient Financial Services, and Human Resources before transferring to the Wellness Center in September of 2001. She enjoys spending time with her family — daughters, Elizabeth & Jodi and husband Mike.

Graduate Assistants:


James A. Smith – Graduate Assistant, Wellness

James will be working with the Wellness Center as a graduate assistant while pursuing a Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology at West Virginia University. Originally from Columbus, Indiana, James received his B.S. in Exercise Science from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. James will also be in Dr. Paul Chantler’s research lab working with human and animal subjects, as well as vascular function in the Human Performance Lab. Upon completion of his Master’s degree, James plans to get his doctorate degree in Exercise Physiology. In his free time, James enjoys outdoor activities, exercise, cooking, and the TV show “The Office”.


Corwyn Brown – Graduate Assistant, Wellness

Corwyn will be serving as a graduate assistant in the Wellness Center as he pursues a Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology at West Virginia University. He has also received his B.S. in Exercise Physiology here at WVU. Originally from Ada, Ohio Corwyn moved to West Virginia in 2004 and has since enjoyed his time here. Sports have always been a big part of his life, which is what has fueled his interest in the field of Exercise Physiology. In his free time, Corwyn enjoys time with friends, hiking, working out, and the TV show “Friends”.
