The arrival of a new baby affects each individual in the family. Parents take childbirth or refresher classes to prepare. But what about those first-borns who are struggling to make sense of the tremendous changes just waiting to happen?
The sibling group is available for future siblings and their parents. The goals are to help siblings adjust to a new baby in the family and prepare children for their mother’s stay in the hospital.
The class helps children learn what to expect using:
- Art projects
- Age appropriate stories
These activities help to prepare kids for upcoming changes in their lives, explore their feelings about becoming a big brother or sister, and provide them with infant facts.
The group also serves to address fears or concerns about Mom’s visit to the hospital. Program participants get to tour the hospital and see locations that include: labor and birthing rooms, recovery rooms, OR’s, and more. At the end of the class, each child receives a certificate of completion.
The group meets on the third Tuesday, every other month. Pre-registration is necessary, as group size is limited. Families usually register for the group when Mom is about 28 weeks pregnant. Minimum age for a sibling to participate is three years old, and at least one parent must accompany child. Cost for the one-time group session is $15, payable to UHA.
