Located at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, the WVU Medicine Diabetes Education Center has a dedicated staff of registered nurses, certified diabetes educators, and dietitians who offer services for people with diabetes or who are at risk for developing diabetes. The Diabetes Education Center holds the Education Recognition Program (ERP) certificate offered by the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The ERP promotes quality diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) for people with diabetes by certifying that services adhere to the national standards for DSMES. The WVU Medicine Diabetes Education Center has also received recognition from the U.S. News and World Report for its diabetes education efforts.
The WVU Medicine Diabetes Education Center sees patients with type 1, type 2, gestational, and pre-diabetes. Talk with your primary care provider (or the provider who is managing your diabetes) about a referral to the Diabetes Education Center for a consultation. Your provider will need to complete a referral form, and we will call you to make an appointment.
Services We Offer
Our diabetes services cover a wide range of topics that impact people who are at high risk for diabetes or currently living with the disease. The goal of diabetes education is to teach people and their families how to make healthy choices while living with this long-term condition and prevent any complications whenever possible. Diabetes-related services we offer include:
- Blood glucose monitoring
- Continuous glucose monitor (CGM) training
- Heart disease risk factors and prevention
- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) treatment
- Insulin and non-insulin injection training
- Insulin pump education (the Diabetes Education Center does not initiate insulin pumps)
- Meal planning and carbohydrate counting
- Medication management
- Physical activity counseling
- Preventing, detecting, and treating acute and chronic complications
- Stress management
