Clinical Pastoral Education Program (CPE Level II) Residency at WVU Medicine-WVU Hospitals

The residency is a year-long, full-time program designed for students who wish to deepen their pastoral skills, examine their vocational commitment, and achieve competence in pastoral care ministry.

Admission requirements

WVU Medicine-WVU Hospitals’s Clinical Pastoral Education program follows the standards and guidelines of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. To be considered for admission to the residency program, applicants must complete and submit the following:

You must:

  • Be a high school graduate or possess a GED
  • Be invited to participate in an admissions screening interview
  • Be ordained or commissioned to function in ministry by an appropriate religious authority as determined by ACPE
  • Possess sufficient theological education to actively participate in discussions about theological concept and ideas
  • Submit signed copies of Level I evaluations (student’s and supervisors’) indicating successful achievement of Level I outcomes

NOTE: For admission to the Level II program, seminary education at the master’s level is preferred.

Program learning and service expectations

  • Provide pastoral and spiritual care to patients on assigned units
  • Share on-call call duty with staff, interns, and peers (residents are responsible for all weekend, holiday, and one weekday on-call shift per week)
  • Participate in all educational sessions, including:
    • Verbatim
    • Seminars
    • Patient-care conferences
    • Covenant groups
    • Didactic seminars
    • Role-play seminars
    • Individual supervision
    • Designing and leading worship services when on-call on Sundays

  • Residents receive an annual stipend of $28,163
  • Residents receive an additional payment of $30 for each on-call shift

Cost

  • Nonrefundable application fee – $35
  • Nonrefundable deposit at acceptance – $100
  • Tuition – $300 (less deposit) is due the first day of the program, payable to WVU Hospitals (Total tuition $900)
