MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – With its fifth anniversary just a month away, WVU Urgent Care reached another big milestone on Saturday with the treatment of its 100,000th patient.
On the day it opened, Sept. 4, 2007, Urgent Care medical professionals saw 48 patients. Exceeding expectations, the Urgent Care staff was averaging 40 to 50 patients per day with as many as 80-plus during flu season in its first year. By spring 2008, a total of 10,000 patients had been treated.
Fast forward to present day and Urgent Care averages more than 55 patient visits daily with upwards of 75 patients treated daily during peak times, such as winter months and flu season.
“Since opening our doors in September 2007, we have worked to deliver thorough acute care to each patient in a convenient walk-in setting,” Carmen Burrell, D.O., medical director of Urgent Care, said. “It is our pleasure to continue to serve the Morgantown community and provide access to WVU Healthcare’s specialties and resources.”
Located behind Applebee’s on Van Voorhis Road in Morgantown, WVU Urgent Care provides a complete range of medical treatment for minor illness and injury. Typical complaints seen at WVU Urgent Care include fever, diarrhea, cough/cold, urinary tract infections, sore throat, minor fractures and dislocations, animal bites and stomach flu. WVU Urgent Care accepts unscheduled, walk-in patients from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week, except Thanksgiving and Christmas, and has a physician on-site at all times.
Urgent Care is equipped with eight exam rooms, including two procedure rooms. Digital X-ray and lab services are provided onsite. Urgent Care also offers patients the option of purchasing 10 commonly prescribed medications on site instead of leaving with a written prescription.
In 2011, WVU Urgent Care became the first and only urgent care facility in West Virginia to be designated as a Certified Urgent Care by the Urgent Care Association of America.
WVU Urgent Care also has its own Android application, which allows patients to check current wait times, store important health information and learn about the services offered at the facility. Users can also utilize the GPS-function of the app to locate the clinic and can submit feedback regarding their visit. The app is available through the Google Play Store on most Android devices. An Apple version of the application will be available in the coming weeks.
To better meet the demands of its ever-growing patient base, WVU Urgent Care is moving forward with plans to build a new, expanded facility at the Suncrest Towne Centre.
