The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding contributions by a West Virginia physician in healthcare delivery, community service and dedication to the WVU School of Medicine.
After graduating from WVU, Dr. Spiggle went on to receive his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He practiced medicine full-time for more than 40 years, including serving on the staff at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Md., as a department chair, medical staff president and current honorary member. He co-founded the Cumberland- based Braddock Medical Group, a practice that serves patients from the tri-state area regardless of their ability to pay.
Spiggle is founding chair of Allegany Health Right, which provides comprehensive care to the poor and uninsured, and he was instrumental in creating a central-fill pharmacy model to assist uninsured patients. Those efforts led to the creation of WVRx, an innovative public-private partnership that works with pharmaceutical companies to dispense donated medicines to West Virginians without prescription drug insurance.
Elected to the Mineral County Commission in 2004, Spiggle is an advocate of economic development opportunities and quality-of-life issues. He serves on several community boards and organizations, including Family Crisis Center, Keyser Rotary (Paul Harris fellow), Community Trust Foundation, United Way of Mineral County, First Legacy Program and the West Virginia Pharmaceutical Cost Management Council.
Spiggle is also the recipient of numerous community awards. In 2007, he was the first recipient of the Greater Cumberland Committee’s Greater Good Award, and in 2008, he received the United Way of Mineral County’s individual Community Caring Award. The West Virginia Medical Foundation presented him with its 2010 Excellence in Medicine Award for his leadership in public health.
Spiggle and his wife Betty are residents of Keyser. They have six children and eight grandchildren.
He will receive the Most Loyal West Virginia Physician Award on June 21 during the Mineral County Business Recognition and Community Awards Dinner at the Potomac State College Davis Conference Center.
