WVU’s Linda S. Nield, M.D. named Pediatrician of the Year

Linda S. Nield, M.D., assistant dean for admissions and professor of medical education and pediatrics at West Virginia University’s School of Medicine has been named “Pediatrician of the Year” by the West Virginia chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

“Dr. Nield most certainly was deserving of this honor for her years of dedication to the care of children in our state,” John Phillips, M.D., West Virginia AAP chapter president, vice chair of the WVU School of Medicine’s pediatric outpatient and outreach services and chief, section of pediatric cardiology, said. “Furthermore, Linda is an outstanding teacher and mentor to medical students and residents, who are our present and future child healthcare providers.”

The award was announced at the West Virginia chapter’s annual meeting on Friday, April 7 at Stonewall Resort, Roanoke, West Virginia. Nield was recognized for her achievements in 24 years of dedication to children’s healthcare including outstanding patient care, prolific pediatric research and publications, and an illustrious career in medical education and training of medical students and residents.

“This was a sheer shock and such a great honor for me,” said Nield. “It was particularly thrilling because the president-elect of the National American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Colleen Kraft, was our guest speaker. And, it’s been 10 years since a Morgantown WVU Children's pediatrician was named.”

The West Virginia AAP consists of 157 pediatricians in the state and 122 additional members that include surgeons, residents, medical students, advanced practice providers and dentists. Nield’s award is the organization’s highest honor. The national award is given annually by the AAP to recognize individual pediatricians who have made a significant contribution to improving the health and safety of children in early education and child care settings in West Virginia and across the country.
