WVU’s Lambert receives national dental teaching award

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – H. Wayne Lambert, Ph.D., professor in the West Virginia University Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy, was selected as the recipient of the 2013 American Dental Education Association (ADEA)/Colgate-Palmolive Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Lambert received the award on March 17 at the 2013 ADEA Annual Session and Exhibition in Seattle.Lambert-award-photo.jpg

The ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes dental educators who demonstrate exemplary standards and promote excellence in dental education through scholarship and innovation. WVU is the first school to have two recipients of this award. In 2009, Lambert’s departmental colleague, Penny Klinkhachorn, Ph.D., also won this prestigious award.

Since 2005, Lambert has been teaching dental students in anatomy, head and neck anatomy and embryology and neuroanatomy. He began teaching at the University of Louisville, where he served as the course director for the Head and Neck Anatomy for Dental Residents course. The knowledge Lambert gained after interacting with dental residents enabled him to help make anatomy practical to the pre-clinical dental students he currently teaches at WVU.

“My academic journey, while circuitous, has been rewarding, but moving back to West Virginia to teach the dental and medical students has been the best decision I have ever made,” Lambert said. “My students and colleagues make it exciting and rewarding to come to work each day.”

Lambert currently serves as the councilor of the ADEA Anatomical Sciences Section with the ADEA Council of Sections. He also holds leadership positions in three other national professional organizations: the American Association of Clinical Anatomists, the American Association of Anatomists and the International Association of Medical Science Educators.
