MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Hannah Hazard, M.D., a breast surgeon at WVU Healthcare, has been named the Cancer Liaison Program State Chair for West Virginia by the American College of Surgeons (ACOS) Commission on Cancer.
The ACOS Commission developed the Cancer Liaison Program as a grassroots network of physician volunteers willing to manage clinically related cancer activities in their local institutions and surrounding communities.
“This is a big appointment, and I am very honored to accept it,” Dr. Hazard said. “I will be an advocate for WVU and an advocate for good patient care.”
In her new role as program state chair, Hazard will provide leadership and direction to her colleagues and other professionals who care for cancer patients at Commission on Cancer certified hospitals across West Virginia.
Part of her duties will include identifying strengths and weaknesses in cancer care in West Virginia, promoting and encouraging best practices and coordinating collaborative activities with organizations such as the American Cancer Society.
One of her goals is to make sure that patients who are medically underserved have access to transportation. “I also want to work with community hospitals to support their efforts to comply with and maintain the Commission’s standards for providing quality cancer care.”
Hazard will serve a three-year term as Cancer Liaison Program State Chair for West Virginia and can serve a second term based on evaluation of her performance.
Hazard is an assistant professor in the WVU Department of Surgery and at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center Clinic. She is board certified in surgery and specializes in breast care, breast cancer, breast surgery, oncology, surgery and surgical oncology.
She earned her medical degree at WVU.
