WVU Medicine CEO honored by Becker’s Hospital Review

Ranked among top 100 physician leaders of hospitals and health systems

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Christopher C. Colenda, M.D., president and CEO of WVU Medicine, earned a place on the 2015 “Becker’s Hospital Review” list of 100 Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems, featuring hospital and health system presidents and CEOs who hold medical degrees.

Prior to his appointment as president and CEO of the WVU Medicine health system in January 2014, Dr. Colenda was chancellor for health sciences at West Virginia University. Under his chancellorship, the School of Public Health was created, as was the National Institutes of Health-funded West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute. He has previously held leadership positions at the Texas A&M Health Science Center, Michigan State University, Wake Forest University, and the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine.

“On behalf of the nearly 11,000 staff and associates of WVU Medicine, I am quite honored by this recognition from ‘Becker’s Hospital Review,’” Colenda said. “It has been my privilege to be a part of two influential and growing pillars of healthcare in West Virginia, as former chancellor of health sciences at West Virginia University and now overseeing the expansion of WVU Medicine. It is our mission to ensure that all West Virginians have access to high quality and timely medical care provided by the very best health care team of professionals.”

According to “Becker’s,” the executives on this list have experienced healthcare from different perspectives. From completing their medical education and training, to caring for patients, conducting research, and leading healthcare institutions ranging from rural hospitals to health systems spanning multiple states, these men and women have multifaceted understandings of American healthcare.

“Becker’s Hospital Review” has published a version of this list every year since 2012, and this is the third time the list has included 100 leaders. Leaders were selected for this list based on editorial judgment and discretion. Nominations were also considered when making selections for this list.
