Growth continues at WVU Medicine Children’s

An additional 13 physicians have joined the staff

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – With work on WVU Medicine Children’s physical expansion of its new tower underway, growth in the number of physicians has continued with more than a dozen providers joining the staff over the last three months.

“Although it will still be a couple of years before we move into our new building, we have to meet the increasing demands for our services now,” J. Philip Saul, M.D., executive vice president of WVU Medicine Children’s, said. “In 2017, we saw 99,000 unique patients, and we expect that number to be even higher this year.”

Since the beginning of May, WVU Medicine Children’s has added physicians in Allergy/Immunology, Complex Care Pediatrics (the care of children with multiple chronic conditions), Gastroenterology, Genetics, Hematology/Oncology, Hospital Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Neurology, and Pulmonology.

“This particular group of specialties includes some of the most sought-out services we provide,” Charles J. Mullett, M.D., Ph.D., interim chair of the WVU Department of Pediatrics, said. “When seeking out new faculty, we look for people who can provide expertise in the areas that most affect the children of West Virginia and the surrounding region.”

Currently, WVU Medicine Children’s has more than 150 physicians and advance practice providers across 31 specialties. Four additional physicians – two cardiologists, a neurosurgeon, and a pulmonologist – are scheduled to join WVU Medicine Children’s later this year, and three
– two neonatologists and a pulmonologist – are scheduled to join in 2019.

WVU Medicine Children’s – currently located on the sixth floor of J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, WVU Medicine’s flagship hospital – provides maternal, infant, and pediatric care for West Virginia and the surrounding region, giving care to high-risk mothers, premature infants, and children with life-threatening conditions through adolescence to adulthood. In 2020, WVU Medicine Children’s will move into a new tower and ambulatory care center to be attached to Ruby Memorial.
