MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Vickie Easter Albert of Carmichaels, Pa., is so grateful for t
he care she receives at the WVU Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center that she made a $6,000 donation to help other patients through the Center’s Comfort Fund.
Last month, Albert spearheaded a Pink Day fundraiser, which was started by Proven Winners Flower Company to raise money for breast cancer research. For the past four years, Albert has teamed up with John G. Brodak’s Shop ‘n Save grocery store greenhouses in Masontown, Carmichaels, and Millsboro, Pa., to sell tickets on basket raffles and prizes donated by area businesses.
“I thank John Brodak for allowing me to make Pink Day possible,” Albert said. “I also thank the gals and guy at the greenhouses and so many others involved this year.”
Albert was pleasantly surprised when she received a generous gift from an anonymous donor. “It was this person who made this fourth year the best ever,” she said. “Many, many thanks to that person.”
With her latest donation, Albert’s total gift amount to the Cancer Center Comfort Fund is nearly $10,500.
Albert said the Cancer Center Comfort Fund helped her when she was diagnosed with stage 3B breast cancer in 2009. “I was helped financially and emotionally,” she said. “I’m still going strong, and I still have a long way to go. This is just my way of helping the Cancer Center to maybe help another patient someday.”
The Cancer Center Comfort Fund was established to provide temporary, short-term financial assistance for its patients until they can be linked with appropriate community, state, or national resources.
