Dr. Hazzard heads the VA Section on Gerontology and Geriatrics Medicine for the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, for which he also served as director of geriatrics and extended care from 1999 to 2009.
Additionally, he founded the University of Washington Division of Gerontology and Geriatrics Medicine; the Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine program at The Johns Hopkins Hospital; and is the founding director of and senior advisor to the J. Paul Sticht Center on Aging at Wake Forest University. Recognized as one of the “deans in geriatrics,” his textbook Principles of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology is one of the most widely used and cited textbooks of its kind.
Hazzard received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York City. After his medical internship at Cornell/New York Hospital, he served two years as a medical officer at Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital in North Carolina before completing his residency in internal medicine at the University of Washington affiliated hospitals in Seattle. He also completed a subspecialty fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at that institution. He then served 13 years on the faculty of the University of Washington School of Medicine, rising to the rank of professor in 1978.
His presentation, “Medical Care for the Aging Tsunami: An All-Hands Effort to do Better with Less,” will begin at 3 p.m. in the Fukushima Auditorium.
The Hardesty Lecture was established in honor of former WVU President David C. Hardesty, Jr., and his wife, Susan Brown Hardesty. The series, which brings renowned cancer scientists and physicians to the WVU campus, is a tribute to the couple’s service to their alma mater and their impact on the University’s growth and development.
