Dining with Diabetes at UHC

BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – Diabetes is a common, serious, and costly disease. United Hospital Center and the West Virginia University Harrison County Extension Office are announcing the launch dates for Dining with Diabetes classes.

The weekly class will continue for four consecutive weeks on March 1, 15, 22, 29, and with a follow up class on June 7. All classes will begin at 5:30 p.m. and last until 7:30 p.m.

Classes are for those with diabetes and their family members. The program is free to participants; however, you must attend all class sessions.

Participants learn how to make meals that are healthy, easy to prepare, and tasty. Recipes will be demonstrated, and participants will have the opportunity to taste each one.

Participants will also learn up-to-date information on nutrition, meal planning, and exercise and how to understand common diabetes-related medical tests. Recipes and handouts will be given to each participant.

Diabetes is a very serious and costly disease, but research has shown that those who learn to manage their blood glucose (sugar) levels, eat healthy, and exercise regularly can lower their risk of complications and lead a healthier and more productive life.

“If you are an adult and have been told that you have type 2 diabetes, you will want to consider participating in this program,” Brenda Conch, RN, education director at UHC, said.

Dining with Diabetes is offered statewide and is sponsored by the West Virginia University Extension Service with partial funding provided by the West Virginia Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, Bureau for Public Health.
