Current Hospital Disability Benefits

The purpose of disability coverage is to provide replacement income in the event someone can no longer work due to an illness or injury.  The current disability programs across WVU Medicine may include sick leave, short term disability and/or long term disability.

The details for the current disability benefits are listed for each facility below.

Berkeley Medical Center

Sick Leave
Full-time and part-time employees following the completion of the initial term of employment period are eligible for sick leave. Sick leave is an employer paid benefit.

Elimination Period
You are eligible to use your accrued sick leave from the first date off work due to illness.

Sick leave Benefit
Full-time and part-time employees will accrue based on hours paid each pay period.
Full-time and part-time employees must be paid for at least 32 qualifying hours in a pay period.
You will accumulate sick leave hours, in each eligible pay period, calculated by dividing the Hours Paid by 80, then multiplied by 3.692.

The maximum number of hours you can accrue are:

  • Full-time employees can accrue up to 480 hours
  • Part-time employee can accrue up to 240 hours

Long Term Disability (LTD)
Full-time and part-time employees scheduled and budgeted for at least 16 hours per week are eligible for LTD.
LTD is effective the first of the pay period following the completion of 30 calendar days.  LTD is an employer paid benefit.

Elimination Period
If you are off work due to a disability there is a 180 calendar day elimination period before benefits begin.

LTD Benefit
50% of monthly base pay to a monthly maximum of $4,000 for full-time and part-time employees
60% of monthly base pay to a monthly maximum of $4,000 for management

Camden Clark Medical Center

Short Term disability (STD)
Full-time and part-time employees scheduled for at least 20 hours per week are eligible for STD. The effective date of coverage is the first of the month following date of hire.  The STD benefit is an employee paid benefit for the first 24 months of eligible service.  After 24 months of service the benefit becomes employer paid.

Elimination Period
STD benefits will begin after you have been off work 6 weeks.

STD Benefit
The employee will be paid 60% of his or her weekly base pay for a maximum of 20 weeks.
The maximum weekly benefit is $1,847 for Class 1 and Class 3

Long Term Disability (LTD)

Jefferson Medical Center

Short Term Disability (voluntary)
Full-time and part-time employees scheduled for at least 16 hours per week are eligible to purchase a voluntary STD plan. It is effective the first of the pay period after 30 days of employment.

Elimination Period
You will have a 2- or 4-week elimination period, depending on the plan you choose.

J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital

Short Term Disability (STD)
Full-time and part-time employee scheduled and budgeted for at least 20 hours per week following the completion of 90 calendar days of continuous hospital service are eligible for STD.  STD is an employer paid benefit.

Elimination Period
STD benefit will begin after 32 hours of PDO is used.
Former UHA employees will be charged 16 hours of carryover sick leave and 16 hours PDO.
If PDO is not available employee will not receive pay during the elimination period.
For inpatient admissions, the elimination period will be waived and STD benefits will begin immediately. This includes admissions for birth of a child.
For invasive procedures requiring the use of moderate sedation, the elimination period will be waived for any Outpatient procedures deemed appropriate according to medical documentation.
Continuation of STD after the 5th day off requires approval by UNUM.

STD Benefit
You will be paid 66 2/3% of your bi-weekly base pay for a maximum number of weeks based on length of service (listed in the table below).
The benefit is paid for regularly scheduled work days absent to a maximum of 80 hours in a two-week pay period.

Exempt Illness
Exempt full time and part-time employees scheduled and budgeted for at least 20 hours per week following the completion of 90 calendar days of continuous hospital service are eligible for exempt illness. Exempt Illness is an employer paid benefit.

Elimination Period
You must use 8 hours of PDO before the exempt illness will begin.
If PDO is not available you will not receive pay during the elimination period.
For inpatient admissions, the elimination period will be waived and exempt illness benefits will begin immediately. This includes admissions for birth of a child.
For invasive procedures requiring the use of moderate sedation, the elimination period will be waived for any Outpatient procedures deemed appropriate according to medical documentation.
Continuation of exempt illness after the 5th day off requires approval by UNUM.

Exempt Illness Benefit
You will be paid 100% of your bi-weekly base pay for a maximum number of weeks based on length of service (listed in the table below).
The benefit is paid for regularly scheduled work days absent to a maximum of 80 hours in a two-week pay period.
If you have 3 or more years of service, the exempt illness benefit is then coordinated with the STD, not to exceed 26 weeks. For example, if you need to be off work for 12 consecutive weeks, the first 8 work hours would be paid from PDO.

An employer paid LTD benefit is offered. If you would like a higher benefit you have the opportunity to choose the voluntary employee paid plan.
Employer paid benefit – 60% of monthly base pay to a monthly maximum of $1,500

St. Josephs Hospital

Sick Leave
All employees scheduled to work at least 24 hours per week or 48 hours per pay period (0.60 FTE), are eligible to accrue sick leave. Accrual begins immediately and can be used after successful completion of the 90 day probationary period.   Sick leave is an employer paid benefit.

Elimination Period
You are eligible to use your accrued sick leave from the first date off work due to illness.

Sick Leave Benefit
Full-time associates will accumulate 5 days of sick leave pay per year.
Part-time employees will accumulate sick leave days on a pro-rated basis according to FTE status and will receive .01923 per hour worked each pay period.
The maximum number of sick leave hours you can accrue is 400.

United Hospital Center

Sick Leave
Full-time and part-time employee scheduled and budgeted for at least 20 hours per week following the completion of 90 calendar days of continuous hospital service are eligible for sick leave.   Sick leave is an employer paid benefit.

Elimination Period
You are eligible to use your accrued sick leave from the first date off work due to illness.

Sick Leave Benefit
Full-time associates will accumulate 12 days of sick leave pay per year.
Part-time (P1, P2, P3, P4) associates will accumulate sick leave pay based on hours paid (.0461x hours paid) not to exceed 96 hours per year.
You will be paid 100% of your bi-weekly base pay until the following:

  • Accumulated sick hours have a zero balance, or
  • Illness is no longer certified, or
  • One-half pay disability starts, or
  • UHC’s long-term disability insurance is providing monetary benefits

Disability Leave (1/2 Pay)
Full-time and part-time employees are eligible for disability leave following the completion of successful completion of the 90 day introductory probationary period. Disability Leave is an employer paid benefit.

Elimination Period
If you are off work due to an illness there is a 9 week elimination period before the disability leave begins.

Disability Leave Benefit
You will be paid ½ of your pay in the category you actually worked in the last 6 months up to a maximum of 180 calendar days.

Long Term Disability (LTD)
Full-time/P4 employees are eligible for LTD following the completion of 31 calendar days from hire date. LTD is an employer paid benefit.

Elimination Period
If you are off work due to a disability there will be 180 calendar days elimination period before the LTD benefit begins.

LTD Benefit
60% of monthly base pay to a monthly maximum of $7,500

Full-time and part-time regularly scheduled employees are eligible for sick leave. Sick leave is an employer paid benefit.

Elimination Period
Sick leave can be used after 16 continuous hours off work due to illness.
If PDO is not available you will not receive pay during the elimination period.
For inpatient admissions, the elimination period will be waived and STD benefits will begin immediately. This includes admissions for birth of a child.
For invasive procedures requiring the use of moderate sedation, the elimination period will be waived for any outpatient procedures deemed appropriate according to medical documentation.
Continuation of sick leave after the 5th day off requires approval by UNUM.
