WVU Medicine provides treatment across the entire spectrum of urologic diseases for adult and pediatric patients. Established in 1973, the urology department provides surgical expertise and excellence in patient care so that no patient should have to leave the state of West Virginia to receive the highest quality urologic care.
WVU Medicine Urology is nationally recognized as a high performing specialty by U.S. News & World Report. Our pediatric urology program, ranked 35th in the nation, has the only comprehensive pediatric urology service with fellowship-trained physicians in the state.
Our urologists embrace a team approach, collaborating with experts across all specialties to provide the best outcome for each patient. We work with local physicians to allow patients to transition their care closer to home and utilize telemedicine visits, when appropriate, to reduce the need for patients to travel.

Andrology, impotence, and infertility
We offer fertility preservation and restoration, penile reconstruction, and both invasive and noninvasive therapies for erectile dysfunction.
Endourology and stone disease
Our urologists provide minimally invasive and noninvasive management of kidney stones and other urinary tract stones.
Men’s health conditions
We treat a wide range of conditions affecting men’s health, including benign prostatic hyperplasia, voiding dysfunction, urinary incontinence, and prostate cancer screening and prevention. WVU Medicine Urology offers GreenLight™ laser therapy treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Neuro-urology
Our urologists care for people who have neurologic conditions affecting the urinary system. Procedures we perform include: sacral neuromodulation, tibial nerve stimulation, and bladder augmentation and reconstruction.
Pediatric urology
WVU Medicine Children’s pediatric urologists expertly treat a variety of conditions in children, including voiding dysfunction, reconstruction of the urinary tract, urologic cancers, and correction of birth defects (congenital anomalies) of the urinary tract.
Reconstructive urology and prosthetics
WVU Medicine urologists provide individualized treatment options for reconstruction of the genitourinary system, the organs of the reproductive system and the urinary system. Using the most up-to-date minimally invasive and open surgical techniques, we care for patients who have experienced trauma to the urinary tract, suffer from obstructive diseases of the urinary tract, and have effects from the treatment of prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and other malignancies. Procedures we perform include:
- Artificial urinary sphincter insertion
- Correction of penile curvature
- Penile prosthesis insertion
- Pyeloplasty (UPJ obstruction repair)
- Urethral reconstruction and reimplantation
Robotic and minimally invasive treatment
WVU Medicine urologists perform more than 400 minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgical procedures each year. Guided by a surgeon’s hands, the robotic arms of the da Vinci Surgical System® allow our providers to perform major surgery through tiny incisions with pinpoint accuracy. Fewer and smaller incisions are used, and patients experience less pain and a faster recovery. Procedures we perform with robotic-assisted surgery include:
- Adrenalectomy
- Bladder diverticulectomy
- Partial and radical cystectomy with urinary diversion

Urologic oncology
The WVU Cancer Institute’s Urologic Oncology Program offers a comprehensive range of services to optimize survival outcomes and quality of life of our patients with complex urologic cancers. Our team features Society of Urologic Oncology accredited, fellowship-trained surgeons who specialize in cutting-edge surgical techniques to treat patients with cancers involving the adrenal gland, bladder, kidney, male external genitalia, prostate, ureter, and urethra. Urologic oncology procedures we perform, include: open surgery, minimally invasive pure laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, endourologic surgery, and organ preserving surgery.
We offer specialized cancer outpatient clinics and dedicated support staff at the WVU Cancer Institute. Our decision-making process in each patient’s case is based on the American Urologic Association and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Clinical Practice Guidelines, which provide the most up-to-date, evidence-based, consensus-driven management recommendations. Our multidisciplinary Urologic Cancer Tumor Board, whose members include urologic surgeons, medical oncologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, interventional radiologists, and pathologists, meets weekly to review complex cases and collaborate to ensure that each patient receives the best and most comprehensive personalized treatment.
Women’s health conditions
Our urologists have experience in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, such as restoring urinary continence, correcting pelvic organ prolapse, and treating other conditions that affect a woman’s urinary tract and pelvic organs.
